About the Institute

The Buijs Ballot Laboratory. The Astronomical Institute resides on the seventh (top) floor.

The Astronomical Institute of Utrecht University was founded in 1643. The institute has a long standing tradition in solar physics research. Throughout its history, the institute was led by renown astrophysical scientists, like Marcel Minnaert and Cornelis de Jager.

Today the institute no longer focusses only on the Sun. From the study of solar phenomena like flares, coronal loops, etcetera, grew a more general astrophysical interest in plasma physics and high energy astrophysics.
