Hyades and asteroid Ceres

Hyades and asteroid Ceres

During the winter of 1998/1999 asteroid 1 Ceres moved through the Hyades, the large open cluster in Taurus.

The asteroid, at magnitude 7.9 at this image, moved straight through the Hyades during November 1998.

Aldebaran, α Tau, shines brightly orange at the left of this picture. Note that Aldebaran itself is not a member of the Hyades open cluster. It is coincidentally placed in the same direction as the cluster stars. The star is located some 71 lightyears away while the cluster is at 46 lightyears.
