Jupiter and Saturn in Taurus

Jupiter and Saturn in Taurus

Jupiter and Ganymedes

On May 31, 2000 Jupiter was in conjunction with Saturn. This could not be observed because the two gas giants were too close to the sun. But this meant that in the years 1999, 2000 and 2001 the planets are close to eachother in the sky. And between the summers of 2000 and 2001 the planets are located in constellation Taurus, between the Hyades and the Pleiades. A perfect opportunity for a nice photograph.

The image above shows the Hyades in the lower left corner and the Pleiades in the upper right corner. Brilliant Jupiter, magnitude -2.8, is placed above the Hyades while Saturn at, magnitude -0.4, is the right.

One of Jupiter's mooons, Ganymedes is visible on the original slide and the enlargment above. It is visible as the bulge on the right side of jupiter. The other three Galilean moons are embedded in the glare of Jupiter.
